Mountain View, CA (April 16, 2014) – Fenwick & West is pleased to announce that partner Eva Wang has been shortlisted among five international Dealmakers of the Year in China by an external panel of judges as part of the 2014 Asian Legal Business China Law Awards. Spreadtrum Communications’ $1.78 billion going private acquisition by Tsinghua Unigroup – on which Wang and partner Gordon Davidson represented Spreadtrum – is also shortlisted for China’s M&A Deal of the Year.
Eva Wang represents Asian technology companies and American companies doing business in Asia in corporate and securities’ law matters and will lead Fenwick’s forthcoming office in Shanghai. In addition to representing Spreadtrum in the aforementioned going private acquisition, most recently, along with Davidson, she represented the Special Committee of the Board of Directors of Giant Interactive Group Inc., one of China’s leading online game developers and operators, as its U.S. legal counsel in Giant Interactive’s agreement to go private through at $3 billion buyout bid from its chairman and two private equity partners. Wang’s deep industry knowledge as a U.S. law firm partner, combined with her operational in-house experience, gives her a unique perspective that provides her clients with highly practical and relevant advice on critical business and legal issues.
The 2014 Asian Legal Business Deals of the Year are selected based on three benchmarks: complexity, innovation and breadth. Shortlisted among the mergers and acquisitions of the year, in July 2013, Wang and Davidson represented Spreadtrum Communications, a leading fabless semiconductor provider based in China, in its $1.78 billion going private acquisition by Tsinghua Unigroup Ltd. A significantly-sized deal in an important global sector, the acquisition was unusual in that Spreadtrum was publicly-traded on Nasdaq and was being acquired by China state-owned company Tsinghua, affiliated with Tsinghua University in Beijing.
Last year, Fenwick served as intellectual property counsel to Hangzhou-based Alibaba Group Holding Ltd on ALB China Law Awards’ Technology, Media and Telecom Deal of the Year, Alibaba’s $7.1 billion share buyback agreement with Yahoo! The acquisition was also recognized as M&A Deal of the Year and Equity Market Deal of the Year at ALB’s Hong Kong Law Awards
