Mountain View, CA (July 27, 2016)–Fenwick & West today announced that Casey O’Neill, a former federal prosecutor with nearly a decade of experience handling complex criminal and civil matters, has joined its white collar and regulatory defense group as Of Counsel.
An experienced trial lawyer, O’Neill has worked on a wide variety of cases as a prosecutor and in private practice, spanning securities fraud and insider trading, market manipulation, money laundering, bribery under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, and antitrust. With Fenwick, he will represent companies and individuals in internal investigations, before regulatory agencies, and in private litigation.
“Our government investigations and defense practice has never been busier. We’ve been building a team of former federal prosecutors and SEC enforcement lawyers to assist our clients with internal investigations and enforcement matters by the DOJ, SEC, and other regulators, as well as related civil litigation,” said Fenwick white collar & regulatory defense practice chair Chris Steskal. “Casey perfectly complements the team, which includes former Assistant U.S. Attorneys, U.S. Department of Justice trial attorneys, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission enforcement attorneys, and other seasoned defense practitioners.”
O’Neill arrives at Fenwick from the Department of Justice, Criminal Division, Fraud Section, Securities & Financial Fraud Unit, in Washington, D.C. While there, O’Neill led and co-led criminal investigations and prosecutions across the country, including insider trading and other securities fraud matters, and bank, tax, procurement, and investment fraud cases. Before joining the Fraud Section, O’Neill served with the Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California, where he led cases through all stages of investigation, litigation, jury trial and disposition. O’Neill also practiced with a top tier firm in New York and clerked in the Southern District of New York. O’Neill earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from Boston University School of Law.
“I am thrilled to return to my home state, and to the Northern District, to join longtime friends at Fenwick. I was impressed by the firm’s robust government investigations and defense practice, its market-leading presence in the technology and life sciences space, and elsewhere, and its team of talented practitioners,” O’Neill said. “I look forward to integrating with that team and to supporting our clients.”
Fenwick’s white collar and regulatory defense lawyers frequently are called upon to represent clients in connection with Department of Justice, Securities and Exchange Commission, Federal Trade Commission, and other federal and state investigations and prosecutions, and to conduct internal corporate investigations across a wide variety of subject matters.
