Fenwick M&A co-chair Doug Cogen and digital health co-chair Michael Esquivel have been named among the top 100 lawyers in California by the Daily Journal.
The legal publication’s annual Top 100 list celebrates California attorneys doing cutting-edge legal work.
Doug Cogen – “Handling Large, Industry-Shaping Deals”
A three-time honoree on the Daily Journal’s Top 100 list, Cogen focuses his practice on mergers and acquisitions, strategic and commercial transactions, corporate counseling and governance, securities matters, shareholder activism, and takeover defense.
Cogen told theDaily Journal that Fenwick’s focus on technology and life sciences–coupled with its strong intellectual property practice–positions the firm to help its clients during their most important decisions.
“You’re there in the most critical moments as a company thinks about what it wants to be, what its aspirations are. To be able to advise boards, management teams and corporate development departments on those things is a privilege and deeply interesting, because you get into the guts of what makes a business a business,” Cogen said.
The Journal highlighted some of Cogen’s noteworthy work over the past year, including leading GitHub’s $7.5 billion acquisition by Microsoft and Cisco Systems’ $2.3 billion acquisition of Duo Security and $1.9 billion acquisition of BroadSoft. He has handled over 100 deals for Cisco Systems, including leading nine $1+ billion deals, such as its $3.7 billion acquisition of AppDynamics.
Cogen has also been honored as the 2018 Lawyer of the Year for technology and telecom dealmaking by The Deal; as a leading California M&A lawyer by Chambers USA; in the 2018 “Hall of Fame” by The Legal 500; a 2018 IFLR1000 Elite Dealmaker; 2017 Dealmaker of the Year by Finance Monthly; and one of the nation’s best M&A lawyers by U.S. News & World Report’s Best Lawyers guide.
Michael Esquivel – “Working with Groundbreaking Technology Companies Transforming Industries”
Esquivel provides strategic counseling to both emerging and high-growth companies, handling all aspects of general corporate and corporate securities law. He also represents venture capitalists and investment banks that are fueling innovation in the digital health, consumer and enterprise tech, social networking, software, and cloud computing industries.
This is the second consecutive year that the Daily Journal has named Esquivel among California’s Top 100 Lawyers.
“From my vantage point just the chance to be surrounded by people who are trying to change the world for the better, and to help and enable those visions, is the coolest part of my job,” Esquivel told the publication.
The Journal highlighted some of Esquivel’s key work over the past year, including representing Saildrone, a leading provider of high resolution ocean data collected via a fleet of unmanned surface vehicles, in its $60 million Series B financing led by Horizons Ventures. Esquivel’s client list boasts cutting-edge startups, digital health leaders, top tech companies and leading venture capital firms including Andreessen Horowitz, AppLovin, Coffee Meets Bagel, Everlane, Freenome, Omada Health, Rock Health, Sequoia Capital and Tile.
The Journal notes Esquivel’s innovation in creating thoughtful dialogue among investors. Esquivel organized Fenwick’s Digital Health Investor Summit, now in its seventh year. The annual summit provides an opportunity for investors with a deep understanding of the space to convene and discuss trends, disruptive market opportunities and how to move the industry forward.
Esquivel has also been honored among the United States’ leading lawyers for work with emerging companies by Chambers USA and The Legal 500.
