The United States’ ban on TikTok may be temporarily on ice, but the law that’s led to it reaches far beyond just one app.
The law “actually applies to any Chinese or, for that matter Russian or North Korean or Iranian social media site,” Fenwick partner Mark Ostrau told Marketplace Morning Report on Thursday, with TikTok’s fate still in the balance and people reportedly flocking to competing platforms like Chinese-owned RedNote.
“So, is it safe to move to another Chinese social-media app? Well, maybe for a short period of time,” but don’t invest much time or money there, he said.
The Monday after the Marketplace story, President Trump signed an executive order specifically delaying TikTok’s ban.
