Mountain View, CA (June 3, 2015)– Fenwick & West is pleased to announce that the firm has been recognized among the top intellectual property law firms by The National Law Journal on its annual IP Hot List. This is the third year the firm’s IP practice has been recognized.
“[Fenwick] has long been a go-to shop for IP counseling: It helped build Facebook's patent portfolio and registered iconic trademarks for Twitter. And it has expanded into life sciences,” The National Law Journal noted in its profile of the firm.
“But 2014 included a number of litigation knockout punches that bolstered its reputation as a courtroom heavyweight for tech companies,” the Journal added.
In 2014, Fenwick was lead counsel in two patent trials among direct online competitors, winning a complete victory for online real estate company Zillow after a five-week trial in the Western District of North Carolina and for Silver Peak Systems in the District of Delaware. Fenwick litigators also secured a summary judgment victory of non-infringement and $820,000 in attorney’s fees for start-up client Voxer, Inc. after the company was targeted by a notorious patent troll.
Most recently, the firm secured a total victory for Usenet service providers Giganews and Livewire in a hard-fought copyright infringement case brought by frequent copyright plaintiff Perfect 10. Four different federal district judges had issued rulings favorable to the defendants in the case, which began in 2011. U.S. District Court Judge André Birotte Jr. awarded Fenwick’s clients $5.6 million in attorney’s fees.
"Fenwick's lawyers tend to really have a deep understanding of their clients' business and the technology at issue,” IP litigation partner Jennifer Kelly told The National Law Journal. “Many of us tend to be very specialized.”
In 2014, Kelly helped her client King.com, maker of the popular Facebook game Candy Crush Saga, secure a resounding and unqualified victory in its copyright battle with Hong Kong-based online game provider 6Waves.
Named Technology Law Firm of the Year for the past two years running, Fenwick places substantial importance on the excellence of the firm’s IP services because of the significance of IP for the firm's core client base, tech and life sciences companies.
Many of the firm’s powerhouse corporate clients like GoPro, Twitter and Facebook have turned to Fenwick for IP counseling since the very beginning – with GoPro turning to the firm for patent counseling before they’d even considered corporate counsel. But Fenwick also attracts the attention of established technology powerhouses around the world like Amazon.com, LG Display Co., Ltd. and Cisco Systems.
